Task 3: Production process

In this task I am going to be showing my production process by creating a schedule. In the schedule you can see the different tasks which I have created in order to create my final major project. The schedule is highly effective because it allows me to create a clear and successful schedule which I can stick to.

This task will mainly be focusing on how I stuck to my production process, I will be explaining the task definitions and deadlines. In my unit 5 production process you can see how I actually created the project, including screenshots of my production.

Schedule - 17/05/17

This is the schedule I created on the 17th May. I am planning to stick to my schedule and my deadlines which I have planned, for example I plan to finish my FMP on the 21st of June. I need to complete 10 different tasks which you can see in the image above.

Schedule - 07/6/17

This is my schedule on the 7th of June. I have decided to show a update of my schedule to show where I am and what I need to do before my deadline. I am currently on the 8th task and I am a day in front of my planned schedule. I still need to finish two more tasks before I have finished my schedule.

Schedule- 11/06/17

It is 12th of June, and I have completed all of my tasks originally a week earlier than I expected. This is good because it allows me to make vital changes to the environment.
The schedule I am using automatically fills in the actual schedule. For example when I input my actual completion date for each task it will automatically fill it in on the schedule. If I am late the box will turn red instead of green. I believe that I have planned and managed my schedule effectively because I started the schedule A bit earlier, to start preparing for my fmp and due to this I have completed the project to a good standard which I am satisfied with. To see the final FMP, it will be included in unit 5.

Task 2: Pitch a proposal for a media product

Introduction

In this task I will be presenting my ideas for my final major project. I have developed my idea through focused research in my previous task, I this task I will be pitching my proposal. My proposal will include my content outline, target audience, resources, personal requirements such as project schedule and budgets. I will be pitching my proposal using a projector to present my power point presentation so i can deliver my pitch in front of my class.

Presentation #01

Pitch #01

Feedback

This is my first pitch presentation my final major project. I believe my first pitch went quite well and the reviews I got were good. For instance the reviews I got included comments such as "Nice presentation, I think your game will sell well." and "Good presentation, lots of detail" You can see the rest of the feedback in a image below. Although I had a comment which suggested a bit of improvement and that was to have more eye contact with the audience. I understand this comment because I could of presented the presentation a bit more confidently. I decided to redo the pitch, putting my feedback into consideration and making my pitch last a little longer.

Presentation #02
This is my improved presentation which i am going to be suing for my second pitch. I decided to add more into my presentation, Even though I didn't have any bad feedback about the detail of my presentation, I want to make it a bit longer and include the illustrated images which I have created my self using adobe Photoshop.

Pitch #02

Feedback
The feedback for my second pitch was a lot better than my first. Even though I didn't get exactly bad 'comments' about my first pitch, I was recommended to speak a bit clearer and to look more at the camera and audience instead of at the board. I took this comment into consideration and the feedback for this pitch is a lot better than my previous pitch. For example I got feedback such as "Well Done. It was a very good presentation. You showed everything that you wanted to put in the game, and have a clear idea of how you want it to turn out." you can see the rest of my feedback In the image below.

Task 1: Originate, develop and research an idea for a media product.

Introduction

In this task I will be originating, developing and researching ideas for my final Project. In this task, I will be researching and planning ideas as well as taking into account on who the audience for the project will be and what their interests may be as well as thinking about the different competitors my project will have.

Originate Ideas

I used the website Popplet to create a mind map to originate ideas for my final Project. You can see in the image below that I have created several branches which include brief ideas on what I could Involve in my project.
Even though I am not certain on what I am going to do, creating this mind map has made it a lot easier to think of ideas.

One of my main ideas for my project is to create a video game which Includes me having to create several 3D models using an application such as blender and then maybe using a game engine such as unity to use as my game environment. Eventually, I will be including a fly through of the environment. This project will involve a lot of different techniques and skills such as 3D modelling, Animation, creating materials, Environment and using a different camera and lighting angles.

Research

Now I have a brief idea on what I want to do for my project, I have decided to do research on other video games to get a better understatement on what I will need to include in my project. I have decided to go for an action-adventure/fantasy genre. In this part, I will be focusing on finding different visual and written references which are most suited for my games genre.

Pandora (The environment in the film avatar) is one of my main inspirations. It's beautifully made and each tiny detail within the environment is simply outstanding. The environment has many different effects, the eerie forests which include fog and trees which look like they never stop growing gives you shivers although the actual wildlife and the bright colours of the forests simply takes away that 'scary' effect and gives you a more enchanted feel which makes you jealous that you are not living in Pandora because it is so beautifully made and pleasing to look out. I want to create an environment which makes the player feel the same way, I want them to see the environment and think about how beautiful the environment is that they will want to buy the game and explore each tiny detail of the environment. To get this effect I have been looking at many different images of Pandora and trying to paying attention to the tiny detail which I personally think will make a massive difference such as the different camera angles and the colour of the lighting.

Here a few images which have inspired me;

Even though Pandora is my biggest inspiration, I have decided to look at other films and video games elements which I could use within my project just to expand my ideas and what I could involve in the game enviroment. For instance, I need to research Ideas for architecture and objects within the game.

Elder Scrolls & Skyrim

Final Fantasy

Develop An idea

In this section, I will be developing some sort of idea. I already Have an idea on what I want to do for my project. I just need to develop An idea for what the game is. In this section, I will begin by creating a mind map which will be used for generating ideas for what could be in the game and what the actual game is about. Once I had finished the mindmap I decided to create a mock-up of the game's narrative.

Knowing the background story for the game is important because the player joins Ivan when he is already at the wheel of pain and is working for the satanist, he then meets an oracle who gives him quests and he slowly starts to find out what his background story was before he was kidnapped and used as a slave.
I've also created a mood board to help make it easier for me to visualise my idea. In the mood board, I have included several images of different elements in the game, for instance, I have included images of environments, architecture and different characters.

When creating a game you need to think about the legal and ethical issues within games. For instance, some video games make females look over hypersexualized or their games could involve violence. Even being an addiction to aggressive games could be classified as the most debated ethical concern although The most major concern with games is their violence and serious aggression towards the society. Even though games have a huge number of negative ethical impacts there is also positive impacts as well for example having an age rating method is suitable for children because their parents can choose a game within the children's age range to help identify the best suitable game for their children.

In this game, I would have to think about the ethnic issues around violence, nudity and the way there are 'slaves' within the game. I would have to be careful to not discriminate anybody and make sure the right age is playing my game simply because of the nudity and the violence.

Audience Research &
competitors

I believe my game is going to be an action-role-playing game with a sub-genre of fantasy because of the mysterious creatures such as goblins, trolls, dragons etc. The player will control the actions of the protagonist in an interactive story immersed in a fantasy world. The game will include a lot of action due to having to kill the enemy in a violent way.

An action game requires players to use quick reflexes, accuracy and timing to overcome obstacles in the game and a game such as call of duty have to target an audience which is over the age of 18 because of the violence and statistically men prefer action games more than women do in for example in a survey 75% of men play action games whilst only 25% of females play action games. According to the deltaDNAs head of insight, Issac rosebom he believes is because many games are being tailored to appeal to one gender for example games such as FPS and RPG predominantly having male avatars and not considering the female audience.

“While some may blindly argue this reflects an innate preference, it is quite clear that many games have been purposively tailored to appeal to one gender. This has led to criticism being aimed at FPS and RPG games with predominantly male avatars for not considering a female audience. Similarly, many puzzle games utilise signals that are seen as not being masculine.”

Most RPG games will involve manoeuvring characters through an overworld which usually has monsters. This genre has followed the way strategy games trend of moving from turn-based to real-time combat. The move to real-term combat began with games releases such as Square Enix and final fantasy IV. I will be using fantasy in RPG so this means my game will be based in a basic fantasy setting such as elder scrolls and diablo.

Studies also show that in great Britain there are around 32.9 million people who play video groups out of the 32.9 million people;

  •  82% of them are between the age of 8 to 65.
  •  51% is male.
  • 7 out of 10 are between age 16 to 65
  •  54% of them are in the in the lower middle class, middle and upper middle
  • 46% of them are in the skilled working class, working class and the lower class.

This indicates that the main audience who play video games is mainly males aged between 16  - 65 and 54% of the audience are in the social class; lower middle class, upper middle class and upper class.
It is important to know what social class you are targeting because it reveals a lot about who their audience are.

The lower middle class usually means they are semi-professionals and have an average standard living. This means that they might be comfortable financially and they usually have some sort of college education. Upper middle class are more highly educated and is most commonly a salaried employee which means they will receive a salary rather than a wage. They usually work in a professional or middle management whilst the upper class is normally the top-level executives, celebrities, heirs, politicians etc.

Knowing if your audience is a lower middle class or an upper class makes a lot of difference. However, if your audience is from the lower class it means that they have occupied poorly paid jobs and some rely on the government for transfers. When looking at the social class, you are looking at it as a group and not as an individual so you can stereotype the class by thinking that lower class could have a lot of free time but not a lot of money because of their jobs and transfers but people in the upper middle class will have more money because they most commonly have a professional job.

My game will be similar to elder scrolls so it is easy to compare both games, because of this I have decided to research elder scrolls specific audience due to the fact the audience of both games will be similar. When researching the age demographic for elder scrolls 41% of their audience is between 18 - 29 years of age whilst 31% is 30-39 years and Most of their audience is male.

Once I had finished my studies I came to the conclusion that my game will be targeting an audience for hardcore players aged between 18-32 years old. This is because my game will involve violence and will not be appropriate for under 18-year-olds due to ethical reasons. This means my game will have age constraints because of this I have decided to try and take advantage of not being able to advertise my game to children by involving a lot of blood and gore to the game to keep the 'adults' entertained and give an eerie effect to the game.

This means that my video game will need to be advertised after 9 pm when most children will not be watching television.

If my game were to be released the games with a similar setting or genre will be the games, main competitors. Games which are already in the market such as elder scrolls and Skyrim, I believe my game might get compared to these games and therefore and be judged because of how amazing the graphics are in either of the game and how popular the game was. Players are expecting better games each year and due to this, it is becoming more and more difficult to beat other competitors.
